Readers Report
Two recent shots of 86th Street. Look above the white awning in the upper photoyou can almost see the "B" letter crest of what was once the Benson Theater! Below (where the Burger King is) used to be, I think, a Barracini Candy store. It was next to O.T.B. (still there?). I remember several "ma & pa" toy stores on 86th St. but can't recall the names of any.
Take care, may this site go on forever!
Growing up in Brooklyn has such fond memories. WALKING to school, first P.S. 181, then J.H.S. 242, then Erasmus Hall. I am proud to say that my graduation date from that fine institution was 1965. It took me several years to finally realize that life and education didn't end there. Anyway, I remember as a child enjoying playing with my friends from the neighborhood, Holy Cross parish, where I religiously went to mass every Sunday (mantilla on the head), with a friend or two. My parents always sent me to public school. I remember the 5 and 10 on Church Avenue, and those great potato chips (what a greasy bag) for 10 cents. Walking to Farragut Pool, we had a season locker, and having to swim the pool to go to the deep end. Passing all those wonderful hedge cut-outs of various animals, and wondering how they were done. Going to the dances at St. Vincent's, St. Thomas, and other places. Playing all sorts of games on the stoop, and in the street, and meeting my best friend who lived directly across the street, Regina. I remember Archie's around the corner, and what a time we had there. There are so many wonderful memories there, I could go on and on.
Thank you for sharing your memories with me.
