My Brooklyn was 175 34th Street in the Sunset Park area. My memories include taking pictures in Greenwood Cemetery, swimming on hot summer nights at Sunset Pool and playing lots of hand ball at the playground on 34th St. I attended P.S. 82, Dewey Jr. High and Clara Barton Voc. H.S. I live in Texas now, but I think of and speak of Brooklyn often. I consider myself lucky to have been raised in such a great place with so many wonderful people! Thanks for this great site. .
My Brooklyn started in 1949 on Stuyvesant Avenue between Gates and Quincy, and on Lexington Ave. between Tompkins and Throop Avenues. I was later told that I just missed the trolley cars, and the Myrtle Avenue El. But I managed to catch the Dodgers at Ebbets Field and the glory of The World Series; spending a fortune in dimes on juke box-listening to Smokey singing "Fork in the Road" while eating burgers and drinking root beer at Hayward's on Lewis Ave. near Lexington Ave.; being in the last 9th grade graduating class at Seth Low Jr. H.S., and dancing the Boston Hustle in the gym at Lafayette H.S. And let's not forget Murray The K at the Fox.
As the song goes, "Oh shine a light cause I got to get back to Brooklyn."
My Brooklyn is the Brooklyn of the 70s and 80s. I grew up at 181 Eldert Street and attended P.S. 151, Halsey Junior High and was Bushwick High Class of '80. My memories of Brooklyn will never die. How can one forget the food, the people or the neighborhoods? Although I now live in California, my Brooklyn will always be my home. Brooklyn, I'll love you always.
