Why don't you tell how 1010 President St. really IS?
6 August 1995
Came across your home page on the web and am interested in capturing some of my youth.
I was born and lived the first 9 years of my youth at 1045 Union Street. And walked the 5 blocks to Ebbets Field.
Do you have any pictures on the WWW of this lovely place and if you do can you tell me where to find them...

Nice pages.
My Brooklyn is Lefferts Manor, not far from 1010.
If it's not inconvenient for you, consider a link to Lefferts Manor Association.
Thanks.

[Unfortunately, Lefferts Manor Association seems to have disappeared from the web. Let's hope that the Association itself is doing well. DNM]
Between 1962 and 1975 my Brooklyn consisted of Louie's candy store on Henry St.(between First Place and Carroll St.) Most of my waking hours were spent in there either buying candy, learning how to play pinball (2 games a quarter, 5 balls a game!) or scouring the tin can that was nailed to the wall underneath the bottle opener for bottle caps so I can fill them with melted wax for a game of "skelzies."
When I wasn't buying candy, "spaldines" or "pimple balls" I was usually found at the soda fountain spinning on the chrome and naugahyde stool impatiently waiting for one of Louie's famous eggcreams. They were the best. A shot of syrup, a dollop of milk, and a steady stream of seltzer. While all that was going on, I would usually get my forearms dirty and sticky from the counter (the pattern in the counter camouflaged the stains really well). Louie was the master of eggcreams. The foam would rise to the rim of the glass and NEVER overflow (some eggcream aficionados will argue that the sloppy overflowing kind are the best). For 15 cents I got a show, a treat and a little bit of attitude from Louie (especially if you asked for water or extra syrup) who had about three teeth in his mouth and wore a black merchant marine wool capeven in the summers.
I have a lot of wonderful memories of my childhood in Brooklyn. This is just one of them.
P.S. How many of you remember Jelly apples (not candy apples) that were only available around Halloween? Remember carpet guns, ring-a-livio and fistball? (How many "sewers" could you hit?)

I currently live in California. I grew up in Brooklyn. I went to P.S. 91 (class of '63), Lefferts J.H.S. (class of '66) and Wingate H.S. (class of '69). I just happened on to your page today. I will search my photos for pix of my old neighborhood that you might be able to use.
P.S. There is also a Brooklyn in Iowa.
