My Brooklyn

My Brooklyn was Bushwick (or Ridgewood depending on who you talk to) at 200 Jefferson St. between Wilson and Central Aves. I lived there from 1946 (year of birth) to 1973 when I moved to Florida (except for four years in the Navy '64–'68). Went to P.S. 53, P.S. 162 and graduated Brooklyn Auotmotive in 1964. From reading the other memories here I guess I had a normal life and like many others had my heart broken when the Dodgers left. My father was a Yankee fan and he wasn't allowed to watch them on TV because my mother wouldn't allow them "Damn Yankees" on her television. So he went to club (Pete's Bar and Grill on Wilson Ave. and George St.). We had Caruso's Pharmacy, Eddie the barber, Mancuso's florist, Pauley's pizzaria, Benny's grocery, Victoria Hall (for weddings and any other neighborhood function). Beautiful St. Leonard's Church, now gutted and boarded up (what a shame). Where are you Joey Caruso, Dennis Pullam, Joey Liest, Pauly Forte, Sal Barbara and Anthony Lapore? If you're out there e-mail me and anyone else from the old neighborhood.

I lived in Brooklyn from 1959-1978. I grow up on 21st Street between O & P, a very short walk from Kings Highway. I attended P.S. 197, Hudde Jr. High and graduated Madison in 1978. I remember hang out on Kings Highway down by Coney Island Ave, buying my smeakers at Byhoff's, eating Bella Donna and Amondo's Pizza. I remember taking the Pioneer bus from 16th street to Kings Plaza. I worked in the candy store under the train station on 16th street accross from Dubrow's. Who could forget Jahn's ice cream—it was my favorite place. Fishing under the pier in Sheepshead Bay and eating at Duncun Donuts. Roll n Rooster and Lundy's. I miss it a lot. For those interested, I've been back to Kings Highway as early as last month. Although most of the original stores are gone, the place still looks good. Field Brothers is gone, so are most of the pizza places and delis.
