My Brooklyn

Readers Report

Patricia (Pheenie) O'Laughlin-Mitchell

My Brooklyn began on the corner of Rogers Avenue and Avenue D. Born in 1945 into a large family of six brothers and six sisters. My best friends were Barbara Boles, Pat Burns, Ellie O'Brien, Carol and Artie Farrell, Carol Anderson, Stevie Rosenstein, Johnny O'Leary and Lenny Bitelli. We used to eat pizza at Mano's on Newkirk Avenue and hang around the "greasy spoon" diner and shop at the 5 and 10 cent store both on Nostrand Avenue. St. Jerome's was my parish and I went to P.S. 269 (a brand new school then) and then to P.S. 89, from 1951 until 1959 and then onto Erasmus Hall High School, graduated 1963. I remember the BMT train ride to Coney Island and the Tornado roller coaster and all the rides, Nathan's hot dogs and their fries (the best), real custard ice cream cones, waffle ice cream sandwiches, egg creams with 2 cent pretzel rods, penny candy at Seymour's candy store, Schenley's bakery, Charlotte rouses and the best eclairs, Jahn's ice cream parlor, the "Junction," and bus rides to Riis Park beach in the summer, Sheepshead Bay, and the Loew's Kings theatre on Flatbush. All of my best memories are of growing up in my teens in Flatbush. Pat Burns where are you?
