I grew up at 717 Carroll St. I went to St. Francis Xavier and I can never forget all the good times I enjoyed growing up.
I used to hang out in front of Danny's Candy Store on 7th Ave. and Garfield Pl. or we'd be hanging out in Pino's getting a slice of Pizza.
It was the best times of my life!

99 Adelphi Street approximately 50 years ago. We were a mixed bunch of kids, white black, hispanic, Christian and Jew. Who knew that we were different from each other? We played bases, kick the can, skelly and a few other games that I can't remember the names of. We all got along together just fine.
Coney Island was also my playground. Took the train to Coney and paid a dollar for all-day rides at Steeplechase Park. Sometimes went swimming at Washington Baths. Good Old Days.
Move on to Bensonhurst 10 years later. You could buy knishes and lox at one store and right next door there was pizza. Good old times. Now all the small neighborhood stores where the owner knew you and you could owe him until payday are gonereplaced by supermarkets that are not super at all.
That's my Brooklyn.

My Brooklyn was Flatbush, specifically 1701 Albemarle Road, located between east 17th and East 18th Streets. A dead end was formed on Albemarle Road by the open cut of the BMT Brighton Beach Line. This provided us with a playing area for punchball, Spud, relay races, two-hand touch football, etc.
The pedestrian bridge over the tracks provided somewhat of a backstop for our Spauldings when the ball was thrown home during a punchball game. Other times, however, the ball might wind up down the third base sewer. When this occurred, a wire hanger would be re-bent and utilized as a "ball-puller-outer."
I left after high school in 1962 for California. There are occasions where I could really go for a REAL piece of Brooklyn pizza; can't get it out here. When the Northridge Earthquake struck in 1994, I would've preferred the safety of my "briar patch," the dead end asphalt street of Albemarle Road!
