Readers Report
Brooklyn for me was Christmas shopping at Korvette's at Bay Parkway. Going to visit my grandmother on Baltic and Court St. Getting ice cream at Eable's. Buying candy at Mario's. Going to the Rex Cinema to see a movie. I also remember going to the College Bakery on Court St. Shopping downtown Brooklyn at McCrory's. The memories go on and on. . . .
Ah, a slice and a lemon ice!.
I lived on Sterling and Rochester till we moved to E. 94th Street and Rutland Rd. Lincoln Terrace Park was fun for sports on Friday afternoon and meeting friends on Saturday after synagogue. The library on Schenectady and Eastern Parkway was a great place. Sorry I chose City College over Brooklyn College. Even the subway looks great in retrospect as it went dark and rumbled underground on Eastern Parkway after leaving Sutter Ave. Moved to Church Ave. after I married. I remember when Canarsie still had open lots and I watched those fisherman on the pier who never ever caught anything.
I grew up in Flatbush, lived on E. 34th Street between Snyder and Tilden. We went to Holy Cross school. Played all day at either P.S. 181 schoolyard or at the Flatbush Boys' Club. We then moved to Nostrand Avenue between Martense and Church. My first job was in Al's Toyland on Church Ave. We were always busy playing some kind of game. Kids today would never have the fun we did. We learned to be sociable with one another because most of us had the same thing (nothing.) Families helped each other out back then. Brooklyn was always a place that you could learn a lot about life. That's why my wife, four kids still live here in the Marine Park section.
