My Brooklyn

Readers Report

Joe

I am not originally from Brooklyn, but my grandfather's family is from Flatbush and I just love it there. I plan on moving to Bensonhurst sometime soon and can't wait.

My Brooklyn is East New York, early 50s through early 60s. Riverdale Avenue, between Georgia & Sheffield. My elementary school, P.S. 190, was my backyard. It was the most wonderful time of my life. Everyone watched out for each other. . . . You called your friends' mothers by their first names. . . . As everyone else has noted, you were poor but didn't know it. A ball and a penny, a front stoop, some chalk, those were our toys and we played all day. Very few had cars . . . why we could walk to Blake Avenue, Pitkin Avenue, Sutter Avenue and of course, Fortunoff's to buy our 45's. What else could you need? The Kosher pizza parlor on New Lots, Meyer's Deli, Mrs. Lou's grocery store, egg creams at the candy store corner of Pennsylvania and Riverdale, the Biltmore Movie Theater. Everything was at our fingertips. If anyone out there shares these same memories, please contact me. East New York is always in my heart.

My Brooklyn is from 1969-88, resided at 38th St., Ft. Hamilton Pkwy. Elementary school P.S. 131, J.H.S. Montauk 223, H.S. John Jay, Park Slope. To any Park Slope boys out there, "What's up?" Remembering taggers from P.S.B.- T.S.T.- W.O.W. crew members. Delk, Rinster, how are you's, if you're out there. Hung out on 22nd St., 5th Ave. from '82-'88. Owned a burgundy Park Avenue, then white Buick Riviera "ragtop." Worked in Bay Ridge Home Health Care before leaving to the Marine Corps. Special thanks to my industrial arts teachers in high school Mr. Napolitano, for having faith in me and seeing the talent buried in this young man—talent that has taken me to own my own business where I can make an honest living. To all the girls I dated and to all my home boys, the best of luck in your personal lives and careers. Wishing I had a slice of pizza from Joe's on 21st and 5th and a chicken calzone on Prospect and 7th. If there's anyone out there write back. "See y'a."
