My Brooklyn

Readers Report

Lori-Ann Schwartz

Brooklyn was a ride to Jahn's to watch someone actually try to finish a kitchen sink, or a walk to Kings Highway for a pizza or a dozen bagels. It was P.S. 197, Hudde Junior High, James Madison High School, and Brooklyn College. It was a ride on the Cyclone at Coney Island and the best fries at the real Nathan's. Brooklyn was home.

But now Texas is home. No Brooklyn here.

My Brooklyn began without my consent on 17 September 1932 at Midwood Sanitorium somewhere on Parkside Ave (no longer exists). We moved southward along the Ocean Ave. corridor: 1430 Ocean Ave., 1053 E. 13th St. (bet J and K). P.S.. 99, 1938-1941. Then 2245 E. 19th St (cor Neck Rd.) in summer '41.Then WAR and no more moves.

Memories—the old Sheffield milk plant on E. 16th and Neck Rd., horses, carts and manure! Ocean Ave. trolley—flattening 1943 zinc pennies under the wheels. Walking to Floyd Bennett field on Saturday afternoons hoping to see an airplane. P.S.. 206 until 1945, then J.H.S. 234 (Cunningham). James Madison H.S., class of 1949. (G-d it's 50 yrs!). Graduation at Brooklyn Paramount. Pizza at Lombardi's (Coney Island Ave. and Ave. N). Softball at Ave. S and Ave. X parks. The Avalon and Kingsway. Hot roast beef at Dubrow's. Trudy. Carolyn Diamond. Brenda. So much more! Left in body but not in spirit in 1959 with degrees from NYU and a family. Now retired near Wash DC. 2 grandkids. What a wonderful site! Most of my dreams take place in Brooklyn. J.M.H.S. '49ers please contact me.

I was born on Hinsdale St. Moved to 588 Livonia Ave. at five years old and then to 1389 St. Johns Pl. at 7. I went to P.S. 167 and graduated in 1949. I had one year in Erasmus and then went to Alexander Hamilton Vocational High School. I left Brooklyn in 1953 to serve in the USAF. Those were wonderful years and I think of them often. Saturday mornings at the Utica Theatre and Sundays at the Eastern Parkway Roller Rink. The holy days walking on Pitkin Ave and hanging out at the candy store on Buffalo & Eastern Pkwy (where I met my wife—she was 13) across from kitzel park. I would love to hear from anyone who shares my background or who might know me or my sister Estelle.
