The Farraguat Projects on York Street saw me grow up until the age of nine. The building had 14 floors and on Halloween we'd cover every floor and every apartment. Schoolmates and best friends from that time were Rosemary D'Ambrosio, William (Billy) Washington, Miriam (Tati) Andino and so many others. The rest of my years while in Brookly were on Cumberland Street. My cousin Zina and I would walk down to Fulton Ave at 6 in the morning to get good seats at the Murray D'K shows. Those were the days!
My Brooklyn was very smallreally my neighborhoodit was like a friendly small town. Granted it was many years ago, but I do not remember any form of discrimination or racism. My neighborhood had families from all over the world, all religions, colors, etc. We were all in about the same financial situations, not rich, not poor, just folks. It was a nice place to grown up, and we even had a few trees. Great memories.
I was born on the boardwalk in Coney Island in 1950 at the old Half Moon Hotel. Grew up on East 5th Street near Kings Highway and Ocean Parkway. I went to P.S. 215, David A. Boody J.H.S.(I was an SP brat) then on to Abraham Lincoln H.S. I left Brooklyn in 1972 after graduating college (LIU) and have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area this whole time. I go back to NY on business a few times a year and always rent a car and have a Brooklyn Day. There is a common, unspoken bond between Brooklynites: Brooklyn is in my blood and soul. Growing up there gave us an edge in life, the ability to think on our feet . . . a true gift. No matter where I live . . . I am a Brooklyn boy.
