1285 Lincoln Place was my beloved Brooklyn homeborn & bred there. Right at the corner of Lincoln Place & Schenectady Avenueone block from Eastern Parkway and the Utica Avenue subway. This is a central place in my novel in progress, chronicling my parents' and grandparents' Holocaust experiences that brought them from Berlin, Germany, in 1939, to Lincoln Place, in Brooklyn. On Schenectady Avenue1950's, we had Emmet Kosher meat market, the Big Apple Fruit Store, a wonderful knish store on St. John's Place, and a deli on Schenectady Ave. corner St. John's Place. Also, right next to that, a small stationery store, also a luncheonette right below our apartment house, on the corner of Lincoln & Schenectady. 1285 Lincoln Place is a mystical magical place for me, and although we moved away (to Schenectady & Empire Blvd.) and later Canarsie & then Connecticut, I still dream of our small apartmentthe walks we took to Prospect Park, Botanic Gardens, Grand Army Plaza Library, Pitkin Ave., etc. It was a very beautiful and meaningful part of my life. I would love to hear from anyone out there who knows this neighborhood or has lived there. We were also so close to the Lubavitch World Headquarters, which was also great, and the Young Israel nearby. Also, spent many wonderful times in Lincoln Terrace Park, near Rochester/Buffalo Ave. off Eastern Parkwayit was safe, and we often went there on not summer eves to cool off. A lot of immigrants (like my family) went there, and many of us on hot summer eves sat on the benches of Eastern Parkway. Love to hear from youall lovers of Brooklyn and especially those from my neighborhood to share fond memories. Please e-mail me.
My Brooklyn in the sixties was a time of confusion. My Irish mother in 1960 gave me up for adoption. I was adopted by a Jewish couple. My adopted mother's father owned a pharmacy on Avenue O near the West 8th. Street. It had a soda fountain and place to eat. It was a great place! My Birth mother stayed at the old Saint George Hotel while pregnant. Anyone remember?
I was raised in Bushwick and attended J.H.S. 57, Bushwick H.S. and The City College of New York. I was in Vietnam '67/'68 (70th Engr. 1st. Calvary). I settled in Sydney, Australia to practice town planning in '69 and am still here. I visit NYC to catch up on planning in the City every couple of years (next trip is Dec. 2001). I am particularly interested in community restoration.
Would like to hear from anyone interested in contacting me and I can give more information.
