Now in Florida.
I moved from Brooklyn when I was only ten, so I have some pretty good memories growing up. I played with all the boys (since I had three brothers). My best memories: had a scooter made out of a milk box . . . had my own carpet gun which was made from a piece of wood, a rubber band and wooden clothespin and we would rip up thrown-out linoleum and use the pieces to shoot from the carpet gun . . . had my own collection of marbles (cat's eye marbles were valuable) . . . was really good tossing the tops . . . I went to a Catholic school and every Christmas holiday my class would sing carols at a local bank in front of an enormous Christmas tree . . . my dad coming home from work from the docks (he was a longshoreman on the Brooklyn piers) . . . hearing the fruit and vegetable man coming down my street yelling "Warteeemelon" . . . going to a chicken market with my my mom and watching live chickens get slaughtered (couldn't do that now) . . . still can taste the Italian ices . . . going to the movies (The Lido) on Court St. . . . a sad memory of my brother being layed out at Cusimano & Russo when he was only 2 yrs old . . . but mostly happy memories.
The Brooklyn I knew was 1936 to 1940 at Boys' High School . . . the subway rides to Manhattan and to Coney Island with my school friends, the Broadway shows and the Brooklyn Museum . . .
