1059şBlake Avenue, Hy's grocery, Katz's candy store, the Bund's Workmen's Circleour teacher Mr. Blanc. P.S. 64 The Kinema. 1951 We moved near Highland Park. Jerome Street,şthe great library on Arlington between Warwick and Ashford. Two baseball diamonds, basketball courts, numerous tennis and handball courts. I lived a large part of my life in highland park. P.S. 171 A great teacher Frederick Joseph Vorbeck. F.K. Lane Max Salz who taught me how to interpret history. Mr. Bermanşour baseball coach.şşA real man and a superb coach. Temple Sinai, Arlington and Bradford, a great place for Jewish youth. Dr. Reich, the educational director, and above all Rabbi Silverstein, who taught us the meaning of Judaism. My friends from those days Richard Hoffman, MauriceşLeonard, Leon Met, Ann Greenberg, Susan Hecker, Michael Schultz, Chuck and Steve and Marshall. In the 60s Viet Nam. I served oneştour of duty. A marvelous memory, speaking to Jack Roosevelt Robinson outside of Ebbets Field. He was my hero and I cried when he died. Today I live in Israel. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers.
Ah yes . . . Brooklyn. Ocean. Parkway and Foster Avenue. Sitting on the benches and flirting with the guys. The Ocean Parkway Jewish Center and the High Holidays. Getting "dressed up" and waiting for the boys to come out to continue the flirting.
I so happily remember biking to Brighton Beach, locking the blue Schwinn and going with the blanket and radio to Bay 2. . . . Ah yes! Once on the beach the walking began. We would walk up and down the beach all day long and flirt with the boys (did we ever do anything else?).
At the other end of Ocean Parkway there was the Black and White Stables. Riding through Prospect Park feeling like a free soul.
Park Circle Roller Skating Rink was the place to be on Saturday when it rained or was cold. Judy Linde could really skate the dances. (Where is she now?)
Bensonhurst! Yes that is the heart of Brooklyn! You can go on 18th Ave. in August and join the wonderful feast! Or you can eat the best Pizza ever, whether it's at L&B spumoni gardens, or Mike's on 20th Ave. and 75th St. Bensonhurst is filled with love and longtime friendships. In May you can visit the Fort Hamilton feast, and you can go to all the crazy block parties in the summer. And to do some serious shopping you can walk along 86th Street and go in all the great stores. I love Bensonhurst.
