My Brooklyn

Readers Report

Naomi Hersh Clackum

I've been trying to go home since 1954! I yearn for real pizza, I'm a prisoner of the south! I guess I will remain here, but I am desperate for pictures of the old neighborhood.

Help! I lived in Bensonhurst, on 86th St. between 18th and 19th Ave. I had a stoop! No one here knows what that is! Help.........

My Brooklyn involves growing up and having fun during the 70s and 80s. During this time period, you could stop at just about any corner store and find good treats to eat and drink. There are always block parties to meet dudes and dames. There was such a thing as block gangs and turfs. My block, Hancock between Bushwick and Broadway, was an up and coming block during that time. It seemed like we had million one kids there. Broadway was a bustling, hustling street. You could go up to Gates Ave. and check the fly clothes and kicks. There was a movie theatre that showed all of the hits. We used to go up in the balcony and throw stuff off. Talk about crazy good times. We used to sneak on trains (can't tell you how, it can still be done). The neighborhood schools are P.S.45 (new when I moved there), J.H.S. 296 and the catholic school 14 Holy Martyrs. If you ever lived in the neighborhood at that time and almost got run over by kids on bikes on Bushwick Ave., it was probably one of us. There was a blackout in 1968 which caused the downfall of Broadway. There was Chicken Delight, The Shabazz restaurant, Jackson Clothes, Rexall Drugs and many others that are long gone. Take my word, it was a fun place. If you grew up there during that time period, e-mail me.

I grew up in Brooklyn and attended P.S. 25, Thomas Jefferson High, and Brooklyn College.I enjoyed revisiting the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. My wife and I spent many weekend afternoons in the Grand Army Plaza Library and Botanical Gardens.

During World War II my father worked in the Navy Yard.

P.S. I am still a Brooklyn Dodger fan.

I was born at 1160 President Street. Later on, we moved frequently to such places as Montgomery Street, Linden Blvd., Ocean Pkwy. (at Caton Ave.), Ocean Avenue, and Sullivan Place (near Ebbets Field). I am putting such stuff in the lengthy Life History I am currently writing for those I eventually leave behind.
