Readers Report
East New York in the twenties and thirties . . . Pennsylvania Avenue between Riverdale and Livonia opposite Jefferson field. . . . Handball, punchball, soccer, stickball, touch football . . . we didn't lack for games to play! The candy store on the corner . . . roasting mickies [potatoes] in the gutter . . . walking to Fortunoffs at Georgia and Livonia where their one store soon expanded into adjacent stores. . . . The IRT rumbling day and night.
Looking back now, it seems like another world. How times have changed! Or have we changed?

I was born in Brooklyn 62 years ago. My grandparents were immigrants from Norway and we lived in Red Hook. . . . I had wonderful times there as a child . . . lots of friends . . . and extra mothers who looked out for us . . . a real tight neighborhood. Last time I was there it had changed, so many people there now. . . . But I have my memories. . . . Went to P.S. 30, which is gone now. . . . Coney Island not too far away . . . Prospect Park . . . so many things to do.. . . Family was all around me. Now families are everywhere . . . including my own. . . . I miss the closeness that we had then with friends and family. . . . Nothing but good memories. . . . Thank you for sharing.

My Brooklyn is right off of the entrance to Prospect Park (on Ocean Ave.) As a 20-year-old female, I still remember riding my bike twice around the parks' circle, stopping at the Meadow to eat a snack, standing on the bridge and looking out at the boathouse. My Brooklyn is Flatbush.

Marilyn Macormack & John Hulse
Flatbush was home to us. 1940s through 1960s. Holy Cross, St. Jeromes, P.S. 89, Rogers Avenue, Church Avenue. We have enjoyed reading all the messages and wonder why no one has added lately. We now live in Washington State and unfortunately . . . do not care to return to the present day Brooklyn. We miss so much, the good things Brooklyn showed us. Marilyn lived at 282 Clarkson Avenue and John called 1117 Rogers Avenue home. If you lived in Flatbush, please write us.
