My Brooklyn

Readers Report

Alex Perlin

My Brooklyn is Canarsie of the 1960s & 70s. I lived at 1016 E. 103rd Street for almost 20 years. I was born in Brownsville in 1957 and moved to Canarsie when I was only 2 years old. Some of my memories include taking the city bus to the 64-65 Worlds Fair, buying knishes for 20 cents from Ruby the Knishman (a Canarsie legend) and being one of the original roller hockey players at P.S. 279 park. I left Brooklyn in 1984 for the Hartford CT area but I come back often as my dad and buddies still call Kings County home. As the years filter by I still find that I am homesick for "My Brooklyn."

My mom's family was named Herman and lived on King's Highway during the period of (roughly) 1944-1949. Mom went to James Madison. Anyone who remembers that time, or Coney Island or Sheepshead Bay, or finding money under the boardwalk, or who can share some special memories of Jacob, Molly, Harriet, Norman , Eddie, or Rita, PLEASE PLEASE write! Mom would love to hear from you.

My Brooklyn is 18th Ave. on sunny Saturday mornings; Joey Mattone pickin on me all year at P.S. 101, and on my last day there being so nice to me he made me cry; being on 86th Street when John Travolta was filming Saturday Night Fever. It's about the blackout we had one summer, when the Son of Sam was loose, and not being scared cause your dad and Steven Bonanno was protecting you. It's all about goin to your Nonna's house and hanging out with your aunts and uncles who are young and beautiful. It's about your dad being the superintendent at Regina Pacis Residence and having hundreds of grandparents. It's about Sabrina Goolsby ringin my bell in the mornings for school and yellin in the intercom "ITS SABRINA!" It's about Sabrett hotdogs in front of Key Food on Saturdays while my mom went food shopping; Mr. Softee's beautiful song on a hot summer night. It's about living next door to the father of the guy who played Paulie Gatto in The Godfather. It's about Nellie Bly park and beggin for your parents to take you when you live RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! And finally it's about 2424 Cropsey Ave., where in my mind it's perfect. I wouldn't want to be from anywhere else.
