I am born and raised in Flatbush, but I live now in Bushwick. It is a downright scary and depressing place to live. The landscape is dominated by butchered 2- and 3-storey aluminum sided row houses, 90% of which retain none of their original charm. I moved there to escape the high rents and gentrification of nearby Williamsburgh, although it has proved not so easy to cope with the atmosphere. The main drag, Bushwick Ave., does have some beautiful architecture, but unfortunately, no one seems eager to reinvest in the area and renovate these structures. There is virtually no shopping, and the only way to get food at night is to order Chinese food. Part of the problem is the fact that Broadway is mostly a burnt-out, boarded up warzone starting around Myrtle Ave., and getting progressively worse as one moves east towards Queens. This strip has still not recovered from the riots in the late 60s which scared away all but the most hardcore residents, and basically all it's investors. I imagine it is Bushwick's reputation that dooms it for the time being, because its proximity to Manhattan is surpassed only by Williamsburgh. I can't complain too much though (I only pay $150 a month in rent) about Bushwick's lack of gentrification, it will come in time I'm sure, it would just be nice to see something positive happen to the area. This is one place (along with Brownsville, Bed-Stuy, and East New York) that certainly has NOT benefitted from the current renaissance and renewed interest in Brooklyn.

Help! I am trying to locate relatives of my husband. He was born Michael Aronoff at now-closed Brooklyn Doctors' Hospital 5th Ave. and 45th St., formerly Boro Park Maternity Hospital. He was then placed for adoption. Does anyone know any people with name Aronoff? Anyone ever stayed at this hospital? Lived in this area during 1950s? MANY thanks for any help anyone might give us.
