My Brooklyn

Readers Report

Sonny Jensen

MY Brooklyn was growing up on 58th Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave. It was back in the fifties and life could not have been any better. I married Jeanie Memolo from 55th Street, who, I am sorry to say, passed away in 1981. Jeanie left me with a wonderful son, Tommy, who has made me a grandfather to Jack in April. I would love to hear from anyone from the old neighborhood. I moved out of Marine Park in 1976 to Long Island. Please feel free to e-mail me. I would move back in a NY minit. But I know that can't be. So I will hold on to the great memories. Take care. Sonny

My days in Erasmus High: the year—1954. My boyfriend and I having lunch in Nedick's. Mr. West, my English teach, who looked like the singer Johnny Ray. Mr. Passoni, the music teacher. Then we moved to Midwood and my fondest memory was my counselor, Mrs. Frances Wonder. I always said her name matched her. She was really my guide through school. Then there was Brighton Beach and Bay 2 in the summer were we seemed to just drift through the lazy days. My friends Ellie Bernstien and Barbara (sorry I can't remember your last name) and the new boy that used to meet me at the sugar bowl after school and walk me home. (In those days you could walk alone or with your boyfriend with out any fear.) I also remember being a soda jerk in my dad's store and making egg creams and malted and black and white ice cream sodas. Anyone remembering Sam and Dave's Luncheonette on Flatbush Ave., feel free to contact me.

I have a favor to ask...

My cousin, Harriet Oxman was the former Principal of Erasmus Hall High School.

In fact, her entire professional educational career was spent at Erasmus, where she started as a teacher and went through the ranks until she became the Principal. She is working on a memoir and is interested in the recollections of former students and staff from the years 1957 - 1982.

She does not yet have a computer nor obviously access to the Internet.

If any of you former "Erasmanians " (is that the term) have an item of interest you can contact her at:
