My Brooklyn

Morris

My fondest memories are from Brighton Beach and Coney Island although I have lived in Bensonhurst and Sea Gate. I spent many a summer day walking the length of the beach selling sodas and pretzels. Maybe some of you out there have bought from me. At night we used to hang around Brighton Beach Avenue looking for things to do. We also used to go to the rides at Coney and have a ball. I one time had a job on the Wonder Wheel giving change for the bathroom. I also worked for Lilly at the Wax Museum. The early morning was my favorite time to go on the boardwalk and read the Daily News and the New York Post while I watched how fast the people were coming onto the beach. That's how I could tell if we would have a busy day or not. I bookmarked this site so I can share others memories and will write again with more of my own. Take care.

My Brooklyn was 225 Bergen St. in the 40s and 50s. When did it become Boerum Hill? It was just downtown B'klyn when I lived there. Fond memories of stoop ball, jump rope, playing with spaldeen balls . . . A my name is Alice and my husband's name is Alex, etc. etc. through the alphabet. Neighborhood movies paid for by returning bottles for deposit. The Colony House on Dean St. next to P.S. 47. Nathan Hale J.H.S. Trips to B'klyn Heights, the St. George Hotel pool and the Promenade. Patricia Murphy's Candlelight Rest. on Henry St. I still remember the names of all my playmates. So long ago, but memories are as if it were yesterday. Thanks for the memories.

I lived in Brooklyn from 1946-1969. I am Mary Kopf and I had seven brothers and sisters. The Brooklyn I treasure most is St. John's Place and Franklin Ave.—St. Teresa's. Feeding pigeons on the Parkway with Kathy and trying to catch them, the clover hill behind the museum, the koi at the Gardens ponds, my 8x10 plot to grow peas and corn. The seals at the zoo at feeding time. Ice skating at Prospect Park on the lake. Sunday morning trips to the bakery on Franklin Ave. followed by an afternoon trip to the park and a ride on the Carousel. I graduated from St. Teresa's in 1959 and moved to Flatbush, Linden Blvd. and 42nd Street, but I still went to the old neighborhood to attend high school at Prospect Heights which was an all girls school then. I finished High School in 63.

I still write Susan Bennett but what happened to the rest of the art class gang?
